| The Arizona desert is home to many beautiful cacti such as:
The Saguaro Cactus - growing up to 50 feet tall and can weigh up to 12 tons they have been known to live for 200 years with the first arms developing at the age of 75 and can have as man as 50. The Prickley Pear Cactus - this cactus gets its name due to the pear-shaped pads which serve as "water tanks"- they have a waxy skin to keep them from drying out and retain the water inside- they are among the fastest growing cacti. The Chollas - known for their painful spines and are the most plentiful cacti in Arizona. The Barrel Cactus - this one will be around long after others have died due to their ability to hold water for many, many months using it's roots to stretch out over long distances to quickly collect moisture when it appears- it is like a sponge on the inside. The Organ Pipe Cactus - a rare giant among cacti and built with pipe-like stems reaching 5-25 feet high. |
